Take a Chance on Me

What’s the biggest chance you ever took? Did it work out? Do tell!

Many years ago, when I was living in Las Vegas, I got the mumps. I was out of work for 3 weeks. I lived paycheck to paycheck. Rent was due in 3 days. I had no money saved up for emergencies. I had 100 bucks to my name. The apartment complex that I lived in was not interested in my sob story.

I took my 100 bucks and my swollen glands and went to the casino down the street. I started playing video poker. The odds were not in my favor, but I figured, “What the hell”. I got down to my last 20 bucks. Every time I hit the button I uttered, “Please, please, please”. I had 7 bucks left. I got dealt 4 cards to the royal flush. I held them. I hit the button. The lights went off. Royal Flush. It was a progressive for $1100. The lady came and paid me. I went and paid my rent.
After that I had 500 bucks left.

That is the luckiest I have ever been in my life. Well, as far as I know. There could have been other times that I was not aware of. Like not getting hit by a bus because I decided not to go somewhere at the last minute.

I still can’t decide if it was divine intervention or just plain old luck. At any rate, it was a sign. I decided not to let myself get into that situation ever again. I started planning better. I could just as easily have ended up pushing a shopping cart filled with all of my worldly possessions through downtown Las Vegas. That would have just sucked.

So yeah, I guess it did work out. But, I don’t think I’d take a chance like that ever again.
