I started playing the drums when I was 11. I was in the 6th grade. I started with the snare drum and was in beginner band. Our very first piece of music in concert was Little Brown Jug. We sucked. By the time I was in 8th grade I was in advanced band. Woohoo.
When I was 12 I got drum set for Christmas and started learning by playing along to Partridge Family records.
In high school I made All Region band. Our conductor was Francis McBeth, who is quite a famous band composer. If you were ever in the band I’m sure you played a song called Masque. That was his piece. He did a lot of other stuff too.
That song was actually commissioned for the college that I would eventually go to.
After high school, I played in the college band. I was 1st chair percussion my soph,, jr., and senior year. I also did jazz band, Dixieland band, percussion ensemble, brass choir (they used percussion), orchestra, wind ensemble, and just about every other group that used drums.
I learned all of the percussion instruments including marimba, xylophone and vibes. I play the vibes in the jazz band and in a jazz quartet that my friends and I started. We won a few competitions.
When I was a junior I went to a jazz convention in Dallas. Dizzy Gillespie was there giving a clinic, and I got to jam in a group with him. I was quite awesome.
I played in the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra for a while. It was all right.
After a while I kind of lost interest in it all. I stopped playing. I started concentrating on keyboards and composition. Computers with all the cool music programs had come along, so I focused on that.
Later, I started focusing on other things in my life and the music just kind of got lost. I can’t say I really miss it that much. Sure, I liked it and it was fun, but I just didn’t have that passion that wanted to make me pursue it my whole life.
Sometimes, if I see a piano, I’ll sit down and play a tune that I remember. I only had 4 years of piano, so I’m really not that good.
