You get to plan a dinner party for 4-8 of your favorite writers/artists/musicians/other notable figures, whether dead or alive. Who do you seat next to whom in order to inspire the most fun evening?
I would have to invite Walt Whitman so that he could read from his Leaves of Grass. He would also give us first hand knowledge of the Civil War experience.
I would invite Magritte so he could paint about the experience and put apples on our faces.
I would invite Frank O’Hara so that he could frenetically write about it in the New York School style.
I would invite Raymond Burr because he’s Perry Mason and Perry Mason is the bomb diggity.
I would invite Jimi Hendrix because he is my favorite musician. He would give us all guitar lessons and tell us about Woodstock.
I would invite Claude Monet because he is my favorite impressionist and he could paint us all in a dreamy pastelly sort of way.
I would invite Marshall McLuhan because the Medium is the Message and because he’s fabulous.
I would invite John Cheever because he is one of my favorite writers and because I love him.
At my next party I will invite some women. But for now, it’s just guys night out.
We’d all play poker and get drunk.
